You use what you need. If you need a certain shampoo, then use it. And if you need another brand of conditioner because the other company doesn't have what you need, then use that one.

Some are designed to work with the other products in that line, so you should expect to get better results.

i don't see why you couldn't mix. i do that sometimes. my hair doesn't come out any different than if i use the same brands together. whatever you're happy with.
I do it and it seems to work for me. It just works better if it's the same brand because they're kinda made for each other.
